As part of the City of Toronto’s Long Term Waste Strategy, Stonegate CHC received funding from the City of Toronto to provide sewing repair and skill building programs at our health centre. Whether you are interested in learning sewing and mending basics, meeting other crafty community members or need something mended, the Stonegate CHC is for you.
A free 8 week sewing program offered at Stonegate CHC. Individuals learn to use a sewing machine, basic sewing skills which include machine skills, zippers, patterns, hand sewing, etc. Attendance during the 8 week program is required on a weekly basis. Sewing Repair Clinic
Do you have a pair of jeans that need hemming? Is a button missing on a pair of shorts? Is there a rip in your favorite shirt? The sewing repair clinic is here to help! They are a group of volunteer sewers and menders that do basic clothing repair. If you have something that needs repair, bring the clean item to Stonegate CHC during our sewing clinic to get it fixed for FREE. Menders will: hem, shorten, replace buttons, patch clothing, and seam repair on a first come, first serve basis. Please clean all clothingprior to mending. Only one item per person will be repaired at each Sewing Repair Clinic date. Dates include: Nov. 22nd, Jan. 24th, Feb. 28th, April 17th, June 12th, Aug. 14th. Join Sandra Kuzniak as she leads participants through the making of their own quilts. Participants meet the third Thursday of the month from 1:00 - 3:00 pm and includes both machine and hand pieced quilts. All levels are welcome. Some quilting materials along with a light refreshment will be provided. Registration is required, to register, call 416-231-7070 ext. 307. Dates include: Oct. 17th, Nov. 21st, Dec. 19th, January 16th, February 20th, March 19th, April 16th, May 21st, June 18th, July 16th, August 20th.
Drop-in Machine Use
Our drop-in sewing dates allow you to use the Centre’s sewing machines to work on your own projects. *Please note: you must have experience using a sewing machine to use a machine at our drop-in dates*. Please call us to book a machine to use so that we can confirm that one is available for your use. You will need to bring along thread or any other materials you require. We are always happy to offer advice, but if you need a lesson, please sign up for our Sewing 101 program. To book a machine, please call in advance of a drop-in date to register at 416.231. 7070. Ext. 307. First Thursday of the month2:00 – 3:30 pm. Drop-In Sewing dates will take place on the following Thursdays: November 7th, December 5th, January 9th, February 6th, March 5th, April 2nd, May 7th, June 4th, July 2nd, August 6th.
Throughout the year, Stonegate CHC hosts a number of textile based workshops facilitated by experts. Workshops focus on repair and learning new skills including darning, embroidery and ornament making. Check out the Centre's calendar for upcoming events and workshops.
