Physical Fitness Programs

Stonegate CHC offers free activities to promote physical health and well being.  Please check our calendar for when classes are offered. 

 

Rehabilitation Programs

New Rehab Program for those with Arthritis: GLA:D Good Living with Arthritis Denmark (GLA:D®) an 8 week rehabilitation program for people with Hip or Knee arthritis. This program helps individuals to manage the symptoms of hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA).  The program is being made available free of charge.  The GLA:D program has been shown to help people with hip and knee OA reduce pain and stiffness and become more physical activity.  The GLA:D® program includes:

- 12 exercise sessions:  2 times per week for 6 weeks; GROUP exercise sessions with up to 8 people, to be completed within 8 weeks
- 2 education sessions:  1.5 hours each 

When you have hip or knee OA, the muscles around the joint can become weak and cause changes to the position of the joint. This can be part of the reason you have pain and difficulty moving. The GLAD program teaches you how to control your movements to make your muscles stronger and reduce stress on the joint. Research has shown that 12 sessions over 6 weeks is needed to make lasting changes to your muscles, movement, pain and function.  Call 416-231-7070 to book a GLA:D assessment at Stonegate CHC or 416-604-6264 at The Four Villages.

New Pulmonary Rehab Program for those with COPD:   Living Well with COPD-is a free Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.  It  includes exercise and education for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).  Exercise is supervised and designed to improve balance, strength and cardiovascular health.  A multi-disciplinary team of professionals will facilitate the education sessions.  The Team includes a Certified Respiratory Educator, Physiotherapist, Dietitian, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Pharmacist.  Educational sessions will include a wide variety of COPD related topics from medications and vaccination to nutrition and anxiety management.  The program runs for 8 weeks, twice per week.

This program is offered through a partnership with Stonegate CHC and The Four Villages CHC.   Smoking cessation support, including access to free nicotine replacement therapy, is available to everyone in the community at Stonegate CHC as well.  Call 416-231-7070 for more information about this program or take this form to your primary care provider who can make a referral.

 

Gentle Fitness For Seniors

Are you interested in increasing your fitness levels, gaining more energy and learning more about health, wellness and nutrition? Join this gentle fitness program for older adults (55 years of age and older).  Offered at Stonegate CHC in partnership with ESS Support Services on Tuesdays and Fridays, a certified fitness instructor leads participants through low impact cardio, resistance and flexibility training in a safe, effective and enjoyable manner. Yoga

Stonegate CHC regularly offers free yoga classes to the community. We are excited to announce that the Yoga Outreach Project partnership allows us to offer on an ongoing basis yoga every Tuesday from 4:00 - 5:00 pm on an ongoing basis. 

 

Qi Gong 

Join Weekly Qi Gong Classes! Learn a holistic and balanced approach for the body, emotions, and the mind with gentle stretches, flowing movements, breathing techniques, and meditation in motion.  The class is for people of all ages and physical abilities!  Qi Gong takes place on Thursdays from 10:30 - 11:30 am at Stonegate CHC. Drop-ins are welcome! Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, bring a water bottle! 

 

Ping Pong

Drop in to Stonegate CHC for a game of ping pong. Every Wednesday from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. Paddles and balls are provided. 

 

Zumba 

Zumba is a great way to get moving and get fit while having fun listening to great music.  Stonegate CHC is excited to offer zumba this fall at Stonegate CHC on Thursday mornings starting at 9:15 am. Please check our calendar for exact dates.  

 

Martial Arts Rocks for Kids

Martial Arts Rocks is a free weekly 2 hour enriching program facilitated by a certified Martial Arts instructor. Our program provides children with an opportunity to learn a new skill, build confidence, make new friends, increase body awareness, learn self-discipline enhance listening skills and executive functioning by enhancing memory and positive problem solving techniques.

Sessions include: warm-up exercises, stretches, exercises to improve strength, speed, stamina, sparring exercises, cooling down including meditation/flexibility exercises .Karate techniques such as blocking, kicking and punching. Self defense techniques like how to get away from the danger and disarming weapons like a knife or a stick. Three different Marital Arts are taught: Shotokhan  Karate, Bruce Lee Kung-Fu (Jeet-Kune-do) and Filipino Martial Arts. Students are trained to understand that the above should be only practiced inside the Centre never outside unless they are in danger. These classes are to enhance the students’ self esteem and increase respect for themselves and their peers.

 

Open Gym

Come take advantage of this great opportunity! You will have access to equipment that includes treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike ,free weights, exercise mats, exercise balls and fitness videos.  You must be 14 or older to attend and parent consent is needed for those under 16 years old. You can sign up to use the equipment for half hour intervals. 

If you are new to working out and would like additional support make an appointment to have staff help you learn to use the equipment safely.  For more information and open gym times refer to the program calendar.

 

Pole Walking 

This simple, low impact exercise has many benefits for people of all ages and fitness levels. Normal walking utilizes muscles in the lower half of the body while pole walking adds the use of your upper body muscles, your arms, back, shoulders and neck. Pole walking turns your walk into a whole-body activity. Together we can enjoy the outdoors and benefits of Nordic Pole Walking. Bring your own poles if you like, or use the Urban Poles provided by the Centre.  Please check our calendar for when this program is offered.

 

Tai Chi 

We partner with Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism to offer Tai Chi in the summer months in Bell Manor Park.  For more information, please call 416-231-7070 ext. 239.
